New Signal Analyzer R&S FSQ40 from Rohde & Schwarz Broadband vector signal analysis up to 40 GHz

Rohde & Schwarz has expanded the upper frequency limit of its Signal Analyzer R&S FSQ. The new R&S FSQ40 analyzes and measures digitally modulated signals of up to 40 GHz in the frequency, time and modulation domains. It provides universal demodulation, analysis and documentation functionalities for digital radio signals down to bit stream level. Demodulation bandwidth is 28 MHz in the basic configuration, but can be expanded up to 120 MHz. The vector signal analyzer supports the most important mobile radio standards at a keystroke and is suitable for use in development and production. The R&S FSQ40 combines the functions of a vector signal analyzer and a high-end spectrum analyzer in a single instrument.

To meet the growing demand for radiocommunications, increasingly higher frequencies and larger transmission bandwidths are used. The new R&S FSQ40 microwave signal analyzer from Rohde & Schwarz takes this trend into account. In addition to spectrum analysis with high sensitivity and dynamic range, the R&S FSQ40 for the first time provides a one-box solution for modulation analysis up to 40 GHz with bandwidths of up to 120 MHz and symbol rates of up to 81.6 MHz. In its basic configuration, the R&S FSQ40 demodulates signals with up to 28 MHz in the RF range, or 2 x 36 MHz with the optional baseband inputs.

The option R&S FSQ-B72 expands the signal analyzer up to 60 MHz RF bandwidth in the frequency range up to 3.6 GHz, and up to 120 MHz RF bandwidth above 3.6 GHz. In modulation analysis, this results – in conjunction with the R&S FSQ-K70 software option – in a maximum symbol rate of 50 MHz below 3.6 GHz and 81.6 MHz above 3.6 GHz. Apart from numerous standard settings, user-selectable modulation formats ranging from FSK, MSK, QPSK to 256QAM, bit and symbol rates, receive filters and synchronization sequences, the R&S FSQ40 can also be set for all other transmission methods. Users can even define their own signal constellations, save them as generic standards and recall them at a keystroke.

The R&S FSQ40 performs standard measurements such as determining modulation errors, carrier leakage or amplitude imbalance and displays them as constellation, vector and eye diagrams. Moreover, it analyzes the statistics of these parameters and displays this information, e.g. the standard deviation of the carrier frequency error calculated over ten measurements. It even determines parameters that are essential for characterizing transmitter output stages such as 1 dB compression, AM/AM and AM/φM conversion from the demodulated signal. The parameters are displayed numerically and graphically.

The speed of up to 30 measurements/s achieved with the vector signal analysis function is ideal for use in production and extremely time-saving in development, especially if averaging over a large number of measurements or bursts is necessary. The R&S FSQ40 is a versatile instrument that allows the configuration of multi-standard test systems, which can thus be easily adapted to the changing requirements of the production process.

The R&S FSQ40, the R&S FSQ-K70 vector signal analysis software and theR&S FSQ-B72 hardware option are now available from Rohde & Schwarz Nearly all options of the R&S FSQ product family are also suitable for the R&S FSQ40.
