CHINA: Export of canned orange to EU plunges

Export of canned orange and tangerine products to the European Union via Shanghai, one of the most important trading ports on the east China coast, was 136 tons in the first five months of the year, 80 percent down from the same period last year.

The interim security measures imposed by the EU, as well as the tariff for quota control for exported canned oranges and tangerines from China since November last year are to blame, said an expert with Shanghai Customs.

According to the information, the canned orange and tangerine products were exported to Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland from January to May, the last two of which just became members of EU on May 1 this year.

In accordance with tariff for quota control, which was put into practice as of May 1, the annual quota for export of China-made canned orange and tangerine goods to EU is only 30,000 tons, and Chinese makers are supposed to pay an extra 300 euros in tariff for exporting each ton of such commodities above the quota.

The EU is one of Shanghai Port's major destinations for export of canned oranges and tangerines. And Chinese makers used to be distributed in Zhejiang, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui and Shanghai, all in the economically developed eastern part.

However, as the market is shrinking, only those in the two provinces of Zhejiang and Anhui have clung to producing canned oranges and tangerines for export, experts say.
