China sent professional investigation group to participate in assessing and rebuilding work after the tsunami n order to help countries hit by Indian Ocean tsunami in their rebuilding, Ministry of Commerce sent three professional investigation groups to Sri Lanka, Maldivian, Indonesian and Thailand successively. Chen Jian, Assistant Minister of Commerce, said at the mobilization meeting before the departure of the investigation groups, Chinese government positively participated in aid immediately after the tsunami, shipping large quantities of materials to the disaster area in the first instance. Currently, focus of work had been shifted from urgent aid to rebuilding; Chinese government had undertaken a number of construction projects, and the tasks of the Three professional investigation groups were to investigate damage on infrastructure, make assessment on rebuilding , help the disaster countries to prepare rebuilding planning, and resume power supply and communication as soon as possible, repair bridges, road and ports, and rebuild schools, hospitals and houses. It is reported that the first investigation group would be sent to Sri Lanka, Maldives, and the detail work would be undertaken by China Architecture Design and Research Group. The group consists of 11 people from China Architecture Design and Research Group, Third Prospecting and Designing Institute of Ministry of Railways, Anhui Bureau of Civil Affairs, China Harbor Engineering Company and Ministry of Commerce. The second investigation group would be sent to Indonesia, and the detail work would be undertaken by China Architecture Design and Research Institute. The group consists of 9 people from China Architecture Design and Research Institute, Beijing General Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute, Harbin Institute of Engineering Mechanics, China Earthquake Administration, Hubei Bureau of Civil Affairs and Ministry of Commerce. The third group would be sent to Thailand and the detail work would be undertaken by China Architecture Design and Research Institute. The group consists of 6 people from China Architecture Design and Research Institute, Yantai Northern Ship-building Factory, China State Construction in Thailand and Ministry of Commerce. The first investigation group set out from Beijing on January 17, Bo Xilai, Minister of Commerce, met the investigation group and personally saw them off. Investigation groups to Indonesia and Thailand shall be leaving soon.
