BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH: The revolution in refrigeration technology marches onwards A few days ago, Brazil’s first CFC- and HFC-free refrigerator rolled off the production line at the Hortolândia factory, part of the manufacturing network of BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH, Munich. What has long been a reality in Europe and China thanks to BSH’s determined commitment, is now also making its debut in South America, namely the production of environmentally friendly refrigeration appliances using hydrocarbons. As long ago as 1993 BSH eliminated ozone-depleting and climate-altering CFCs and HFCs in Europe, switching instead to hydrocarbons. Just a short time later, BSH, the pioneer within its sector, introduced this forward-looking technology in China when it took over the refrigerator factory in Chuzhou. Along with the new technology, BSH also brought the country the necessary technical plant- and safety-related know-how, expertise which rapidly spread throughout the supply chain. In June 2004 the Federation of German Industry (BDI) acknowledged BSH’s exemplary technology and know-how transfer activities with its Environmental Prize for 2003/2004. The switchover of technologies at the Brazilian subsidiary BSH Continental Eletrodomésticos Ltda. now marks the latest chapter in a climate protection success story which has seen the company invest a total of more than EUR 20 million in research, development and the re-equipping of plants. BSH also, however, had to invest time and money convincing its suppliers, since the move to hydrocarbon technology is not feasible without the availability of suitable compressors. Although since back in 1997, BSH’s Brazilian factory has used exclusively CFC- and HFC-free insulating foam, the compressor manufacturers’ switch to pure hydrocarbon refrigerants has been a more drawn-out process. They are set to complete the development work by the end of 2005, so that all Brazilian-manufactured BSH appliances will then be entirely free of CFCs and HFCs. “In transferring the technology we are determinedly putting into practice our aim of pioneering the protection of the ozone layer and the climate in general, and enhancing our market position,“ according to Dr. Robert Kugler, the BSH Executive Vice President in charge of the Product Divisions, and responsible for environmental protection, “because in the long run, it’s only environmentally friendly products that will thrive in the marketplace”.
