Picture Messaging Gateway Developed in Close Association with Vodafone and the GSMA Cable & Wireless extends GPRS roaming exchange with international MMS hub for mobile services community Cable & Wireless, the leader in integrated communications and IT infrastructure solutions for business, today announced the launch of its Multimedia Message exchange (MMX) service that uses Cable & Wireless' proven GPRS Roaming exchange (GRX) to carry multimedia messaging service (MMS) traffic via a central hub to the international mobile services community. Cable & Wireless' new MMX solution offers mobile operators a one-stop shop for exchanging MMS traffic around the globe, removing the need for them to manage multiple physical, technical and contractual relationships. The cross-network system has been developed following trials with Vodafone and the GSM Association. Operator requirements were paramount in the development of the system including a standard approach to contracts, billing and service performance. More than 160 operators worldwide have launched multi-media messaging services, making international MMS interworking an important catalyst to MMS market growth and a top priority among global 2.5G/3G operators. Cable & Wireless is the largest global GRX provider with 43 mobile operators directly connected to the GRX and links through interconnect agreements to more than 160 mobile operators worldwide. The Cable & Wireless MMX solution provides a secure, resilient and geographically diverse platform for the efficient interworking and transparent exchange of MMS between mobile operators. The MMX captures end-to-end information about every MMS transaction, enabling the service to provide message traceability and detailed billing. The platform also shields mobile operators from costly testing and engineering changes caused by other mobile operator-partner system upgrades and incompatible configurations. Currently the MMX service is available in Austria, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Spain and the UK. Expected soon are Denmark, the Netherlands and Portugal. Alan Whelan, managing director, Carrier Services, Cable & Wireless, said: "We are committed to introducing market-leading solutions for the mobile community and helping support the growth of new mobile data services." "MMX will allow mobile operators' customers to send picture and multi-media messages to multiple international destinations that they cannot reach today. We are delighted to be at the forefront of this new international multimedia messaging capability." MMX builds upon Cable & Wireless' existing and proven infrastructure and its future-proofed 3GRX which directly connects over 43 mobile operators, and provides access to over 160 mobile operators worldwide. The MMX platform also provides a framework of integration which allows future mobile data services to be overlaid as required. - END - About Cable & Wireless Cable & Wireless is one of the world's leading international communications companies.
