Expansion strengthens logistics Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG is expanding its facility in Cernay (France): more room for packaging, shipping and production Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG has expanded its production center for flowmeters in Cernay, France, yet again. The new facility represents an investment of some 2.5 million euros and the additional space will benefit logistics in particular, with added speed and flexibility for reacting to customer requests. Production capacity, too, has increased, as the company accelerates it magmeter output in step with the latest in a long line of increases in demand. The additional 1800 square meters bring total effective floorspace up to 15,200 m2. Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG employs 225 people at the Cernay plant, where another 25 work for Indap AG, the Swiss supplier of measuring tubes that has integrated its production capacity into the Cernay workflow. Production of electromagnetic flowmeters Electromagnetic flowmeters - magmeters for short - were the very first products manufactured by Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG when the company was founded in Reinach, Switzerland, in 1977. Growth markets and steadily evolving technology have kept demand increasing ever since. The entire product line was moved from Reinach to Cernay in 1995 and production figures have almost doubled in the interim - proof, if proof were needed, of the rate of market development. Magmeters in the diameter range from 350 to 2000 millimeters, as used in the water and wastewater industries, for example, have logged a higher than average increase in demand. As production figures go up and demand swings toward large-diameter flowmeters, space availability remains an issue, especially when changing requirements in services and logistics come into the picture as well. The number of project orders is growing all the time, and the same applies to the percentage of customer acceptance tests at Endress+Hauser in Cernay, which means longer in-plant times prior to shipping. The new wing clears bottlenecks and expands capacities The latest addition to the Cernay plant has cleared the physical bottlenecks in packaging and dispatching, and also in the calibration center, the most accurate and modern of its kind in Europe. Workflows in all these sectors have become more straightforward, more flexible and faster. "QIQ-Flow" is what Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG dubs its current, ambitious project to have flowmeters shipped out of the plant within 48 hours of receipt of order. The additional space now available in the new building also streamlines the out-going-goods handling processes, where simplification and automation are progressing according to plan. Production, too, stands to benefit from the additional space available. Two assembly lines have been expanded. Indap AG, the company that supplies the metal measuring tubes for Endress+Hauser flowmeters, has been able to bring its large-diameter tube production from Switzerland straight to Cernay. The company integrated its small-diameter tube production lines into the French plant back in 1999. The construction project called for major infrastructural changes: the pipes for water, wastewater and gas all had to be re-laid, as did the electricity and telephone lines. The company parking lot had to be enlarged, and the new lot can accommodate 300 employee cars. Construction work as such went ahead without significantly hampering production. It was a little less than nine months before the new building was ready for use in early July. The official opening ceremony took place on October 1st, 2004. The calibration rig allows calibration of all pipe sizes up to a diameter of 2 meters. Successful world-wide and happy close to home The Endress+Hauser Group is a global player. Ever since it was founded in 1953, the family-owned Swiss company has maintained its center of gravity in the corner of the world where the borders of France, Germany and Switzerland run together. The company is still reaping the benefit of its decision to stay close to its roots. Metering flow has always been the core business sector for Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG, and since 1991 the company has invested some 36 million euros in its Cernay plant, including the 2.5-plus million spent on the latest expansion. This recent investment underscores the company's commitment to its French plant. While large conglomerates transfer more and more of their production to so-called low-wage countries, the Endress+Hauser Group's facilities in Europe benefit from the company's new production facilities throughout the world. Cernay, for example, supplies modules, sophisticated devices and purpose-built meters for the Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG factories in the USA, India and China. In this way, the high profile maintained by the company in the worldwide growth markets is particularly beneficial back in Endress+Hauser's homeland. It grew out of the Bern-based Reltec company, which the Endress+Hauser Group acquired in 1977 expressly to expand its activities in this sector. Before the year was out the new subsidiary was renamed Flowtec AG and moved to Reinach in Switzerland's 'Basel-Landschaft' canton (Basle-Country). There were three people in the new plant to manufacture magmeters. Today, Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG has some 900 employees in Reinach (Switzerland), Cernay (France), Greenwood (USA), Aurangabad (India) and Suzhou (China). The range of products comprises Coriolis, vortex, ultrasonic and electromagnetic flowmeters (magmeters). The Cernay plant houses one of the most accurate calibration facilities for these meters. The Endress+Hauser Group The Endress+Hauser Group is a global leader in the provision of measurement instrumentation and automation solutions for industrial process engineering. The company is a Swiss family business and consists of a network of legally independent companies, managed and coordinated by a holding company in Reinach, Switzerland. The group comprises 72 companies in 37 countries, which operate 19 production centres in Switzerland, Germany, France, the UK, Italy, China, Japan, India and the USA. At the end of 2003, Endress+Hauser employed 6,077 people, generating €734.8 million in turnover and a profit of €36.2 million. The company's growth is due to a culture of innovation - in 2003, Endress+Hauser took out patents for 157 innovations. With a wide range of sensors, instruments, systems and services, Endress+Hauser covers the areas of level, flow, pressure, temperature, analysis and recording. The range also includes the connection of field appliances to mainframe processing systems using fieldbusses and automation and logistical solutions. The products manufactured by Endress+Hauser set the standard in reliability, availability, quality and technology. Customers come primarily from the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food & beverage, water & wastewater, paper, energy and oil & gas sectors. They optimise their process engineering procedures with support from Endress+Hauser while taking into consideration environmental protection, safety and economic efficiency. Endress+Hauser was founded in 1953 by Georg H. Endress and Ludwig Hauser. Since 1975, the Endress family has had sole ownership of the Group. In 1995, Klaus Endress took over the management of the Group from his father. In more than 50 years since its foundation, the company has developed organically from being 'specialists in level measurement' to 'providers of complete solutions for industrial measuring technology and automation'. As well as adding innovative products and services to extend the range, new markets have been continually opened up. Competent employees and partners guarantee sales and quality service in every country. Kontaktinformationen: Endress+Hauser Holding AG: Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG: Dipl. Ing.
