MANN+HUMMEL Innovation Award 2004 For MANN+HUMMEL, new ideas, research and development are important factors for success. Prizes are awarded to innovative employees each year. Mr. Thomas Jessberger from Ludwigsburg, Germany, has received the MANN+HUMMEL Innovation Award 2004 for submitting a total of 48 inventions over the past six years. In all, ninety employees have been rewarded for inventions which have resulted in patent applications. The company paid out more than € 80,000 to employees for inventions in 2004. Thomas Jessberger, Air Intake Systems Product Manager at MANN+HUMMEL in Ludwigsburg, Germany, has received the MANN+HUMMEL Innovation Award 2004 for submitting a total of 48 inventions over the past six years. MANN+HUMMEL has filed patents on 38 of this engineer’s inventions. Thomas Jessberger is therefore one of the most innovative and creative minds at MANN+HUMMEL, development partner and original equipment supplier to the international automotive and mechanical engineering industries. Mr. Jessberger’s innovations have accelerated the most recent development of intake manifold and air filter systems. One prominent example of his innovative contribution: a multi-functional plastic module from MANN+HUMMEL. For the first time, the cylinder head cover, variable air intake manifold and throttle body with exhaust gas recirculation are combined in an extremely compact space. The cost and weight of this module are approximately 20% lower than for individual components. Long-standing, successful business partnerships are based on the continuous improvement of existing products and the development of new ones. MANN+HUMMEL has been able to file more than 86 patents and five utility-model patents over the past year, and thus ranks among the top 20 patent applicants in Baden-Württemberg. Dr. Seipler, CEO, and Gerhard Voth, Patents, Brands and Licences Manager, presented MANN+HUMMEL Innovation Awards to a total of 90 employees for their creative ideas. These employees come from many different areas of the company – there are a lot of people from Sales and Production, for example, who enjoy working with finicky things. This just shows that, to develop new products, you do not necessarily have to work in the Development Department. Many new aspects have in fact arisen as a result of close, daily co-operation with customers and business partners. MANN+HUMMEL paid out inventor’s remuneration amounting to more than € 80,000 to its employees in 2004. This sum is however a good investment, since economic products in line with market requirements are based on new ideas. Thus innovation pays off, both for the company and for the employees. The important innovations acknowledged this year include new filter media to optimise air, cabin and liquid filters. Through further developments in filter media, fewer pollutants can enter the vehicle cabin, and engine life is significantly extended through the application of oil and air filters with enhanced filtration efficiency. New production machinery in the Production Department was also registered as an industrial property right. Through this new equipment, it is now possible to cut metal sheet with lasers more quickly, and reduce manual effort. The MANN+HUMMEL employees have also demonstrated their innovative energy through the development of automotive fuel modules. These modules are concerned with fuel-mixture preparation, that is, heating, filtration and separation of water from the fuel. This improves combustion, and reduces fuel consumption. The MANN+HUMMEL Innovation Award ceremony took place on 7th October 2004 at the Company’s Head Office in Ludwigsburg.
