All Belgian digital Tachosmart cards to be issued by 2014
G&D supplies Belgium with cards for digital tachograph

Within an overall contract award, the Belgian Transport Authorities have placed an order with international technology group Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) for supply of all the smart cards to be issued by 2014 for use with the future digital tachographs. According to an EU regulation, all newly registered buses and trucks in Europe must be equipped with such a digital tachograph from August 2005 onwards. Over the next ten years, G&D will produce, personalize and deliver all Tachosmart cards for the Belgian Transport Authorities.

Migrating from the current mechanically operating tachograph to an electronic device will allow drivers' driving and rest times as well as compliance with speed limits to be monitored more effectively. The aim is to enhance overall road safety and to create uniform competitive conditions in the trucking industry throughout the EU.

Under the Belgian contract, G&D will be responsible as prime contractor for production, personalization and delivery of the cards for the digital tachograph. All smart cards are to be issued within this project over the next ten years. G&D's project partners are the Belgian companies Unisys and Ubizen. Unisys is to supply the hardware and software needed for registration of driver data plus data monitoring. Ubizen will issue the security certificates for encryption of the data. The complete application and administration process is being handled by the Belgian Transport Authority through the technical operator, the Belgian Institute for Road Transport IWT/ITR.

"We only recently concluded an agreement to supply the technological infrastructure for Germany's digital tachograph, and are very pleased that the Belgian Transport Authorities have now opted for our security technology as well", commented Michael Nitz, head of the Industry and Government division in Giesecke & Devrient's Card Segment.

G&D is one of the first suppliers to have received certification of its tachograph technology from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority KBA. This confirms that the G&D card meets all European requirements for use in vehicles on the road.
