Companies continually face the challenge of preparing and delivering letters, parcels and consignments as rapidly as possible. As a means of supporting this task, Bizerba has developed an automatic shipping management system - the Parcel Shipping System (PSS). From 30 September to 2 October 2008, the technology producer from Balingen, Germany will be presenting the advantages of this system at (externer Verweis) Post-Expo in London, the world's largest trade fair for the postal industry.Post-Expo 2008:Simplify and organize your shipping management

The system consists of hardware and software components that can be flexibly adapted to the needs of the user. "In its smallest form, the PSS software works together with a Windows PC, a laser printer and connected scales. The user's data processing system sends the shipping data of an order to the PSS. From the software GUI, the operator can select the client's preferred carrier and type of service - such as express shipping, for example. After weighing, the software calculates the resulting charges, prints out the shipping label and returns the parcel number to the data processing system," says Matthias Harsch, spokesman and manager at Bizerba. Such data feedback is important for sales management, since it allows shipment tracking and tracing.
The PSS is a shipping solution approved by all carriers - from DPD, GLS, DHL, UPS and TNT to Deutsche Post, the system accounts for all requirements of each individual carrier, thus making it a cost-effective instrument for meeting the ISO 9000 standards.
"This includes, for example, the documentation of all consignments and the creation of transfer lists for the collector, say DHL, to sign and thereby acknowledge receipt of the consignment," continues Harsch.
The system is scalable from a single-user solution, to a multi-user solution, to the most advanced configuration level – the fully automated system: in such a system, the parcel is weighed on continuous scales after automatic identification. Next, a stamp labeller applies the shipping label fully automatically. Even this level of integration of all the necessary components into the user's existing materials handling system is made easy by the PSS.
