The 12th China-Hungary Economic and Trade Mixed Commission Opened in Beijing On April 19th, Vice Minister Zhang Zhigang of the Ministry of Commerce and State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Hungary Hajdu Andras co-chaired the 12th China-Hungary Economic and Trade Mixed Commission. During the commission, the two sides briefed each other on such aspects as the domestic economy, foreign trade and foreign investment utilization, and reviewed the progress made in bilateral economic and trade cooperation since the last session of the Mixed Commission. Furthermore, they held in-dept discussions on how to further bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Mr. Zhang Zhigang said that the great attention paid by the two governments and the mutual efforts of the two business communities had led to a momentum of rapidly growing bilateral economic and trade relations in recent years, and the fact that the two countries were the biggest trading partners of each other in the respective region. He also expressed his congratulations to Hungary on its official EU membership soon on May 1. According to Mr. Hajdu Andras, the economic and trade cooperation between Hungary and China saw steady development. He believed that bilateral economic and trade cooperation would be lifted to a higher level through close cooperation between and constant efforts of the two governments and business communities. After the meeting, Mr. Zhang and State Secretary Hajdu Andras signed the Agreement on China-Hungary Economic Cooperation. According to statistics of the Chinese Customs, bilateral trade between China and Hungary amounted to US$2.588 billion in 2003, an increase of 60% over the previous year, among which China exported US$ 2.286 billion and imported US$301 million, up by 57.8% and 78.5% respectively.
