QBE Insurance Group is the DHL Australian Exporter of the Year. Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin have been awarded for their contributions to Australia’s Export Industry. Baz & Catherine, Wine, Technology, High Finance & Mt Romance –The Moulin rouge of the 40th Australian Export Awards Trade Minister Mark Vaile tonight announced the winners of the 40th Australian Export Awards at a gala event in Sydney. “We are tonight honouring some outstanding Australians who have done a great deal in their respective industries to take Australia’s talent, intellect and acumen to the global market and, indeed, to the world stage,”Mr Vaile said. “I am very proud to be announcing that one of Australia’s oldest companies, QBE Insurance, is the DHL Australian Exporter of the Year. QBE is one of the top 20 insurance carriers in the world and has managed a record result this year despite the impact of world events and global economic fluctuations on the insurance industry in recent years.” “It’s also a great honour to present two stellar Australians, Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, with awards for the enormous personal contributions they have made to exporting Australian talent and technology and for their vision and commitment to strengthening the position of the Australian film industry in overseas markets,”Mr Vaile said. Winners in the twelve categories include: NSW Riverina family company Casella Estate Wines; Cochlear, the trailblazing technology company that has given hearing impaired people around the world the ability to hear again; West Australian boutique company Mt Romance, supplier of sandalwood oil to luxury international perfume houses; and SunRice, an international food business owned by 2,000 Australian rice grower farmers. (see full listing of winners next page) Major sponsor DHL’s Area Director Oceania Gary Edstein joined the Minister in congratulating all winners of the 2003 Australian Export Awards. “DHL, as the major sponsor of the Export Awards for the last 12 years, is proud to be associated with Austrade’s 40 years of recognising Australia's leading exports and stands firmly behind its vision of doubling the number of Australian exporters by 2006." 74 Australian companies were finalists in this year’s Export Awards. Businesses from every state and territory, large and emerging, metropolitan and regional, have been recognised as export leaders in industry categories from manufacturing to mining, agribusiness to the arts, tourism, technology and education. “40 years of Export Awards has shown that Australian exporters punch well above their weight in achieving continued success on the international stage, despite periodic global downturns and fluctuations. This year’s winners illustrate that success perfectly,”Mr Vaile said. Presented by Austrade and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), the Australian Export Awards are acknowledged as Australia’s most prestigious industry awards for excellence in exporting.
